The Europeans

New contribution to Peripeti – journal of Dramaturgical studies

The paper discusses FIX&FOXY’s first theatre production, “The Europeans,” which was performed in 2005 at the Royal Danish Theatre’s experimental stage “Turbinehallerne.”

The production was a montage of works from the European dramatic canon that explored the theme of war and its impact on European history. The paper analyzes “The Europeans” as the beginning of FIX&FOXY’s artistic work and their conceptual approach to political theatre. It draws on Hans-Thies Lehmann’s theory of post-dramatic theatre, which sees the emergence of experimental forms as a response to a historical shift from text-based culture to a new media age of image and culture. The paper argues that “The Europeans” challenges aesthetic norms and principles from within the frameworks of national theatre and stages a new critical discourse. The production deconstructs the classics and performs them in a contemporary form and context to invite the audience into a lively and playful theatrical space, where they can reflect on the connections between the present times and the European canon.
